Mercedes-Benz started production of the 190 and 190E models in 1982; the 190D and 190E 2.3-16 followed in 1983 and 1984, respectively. The first two models, both gasoline-powered, were fitted with four-cylinder engines with a displacement of 1997 cubic centimeters, delivering 66 kW and 90 kW, respectively.
Our newer 190E does not have an economy gauge, but I am guessing it works like most - measures manifold vacuum. High vacuum would indicate good mileage, abnormally low readings while idling or under decel could be some serious problems, or just a vacuum leak. Check all vacuum hoses and idle air supply hoses/gaskets.

190 vs. 190E. I've recently traded my 190 for 190E. Impressions: Fuel consumption: 190 is better on a hwy, 190E in traffic jams. 190E has perceptibly more power, while 190 runs smoother. The Pierburg 2EE carb is excellent, very simple and reliable, practically no moving parts, mechanical fuel pump, so I'd go for a carb model. A.

4803 posts · Joined 2002. #5 · Feb 19, 2008. The pumps are "twins" and they are not engine specific. Just need to get the proper replacement if it is the pump (s) that has gone bad. No "special tools" either. You can "de-bone" a 190E Mercedes, nearly all the way to a rolling chassis with a just a basic metric tool kit.

The compression ratio in the 1.8L is 9.1:1, so yes, you'll need to use 91 or better octane fuel. As for using higher than need octane fuels, such as triple digit or unleaded "race fuel" . . . octane does not equal HP, torque, clean engines or better fuel economy, so you'll only be helping out the petroleum industry with the purchase.
